  When to get an MOT?

The MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety standards and environmental standards. You must get an MOT for your vehicle by either:

  • The third anniversary of its registration
  • The anniversary of its last MOT, if it's over 3 years old

What is the earliest date I can get an MOT?

An MOT lasts for a year.  The date it runs out is printed on the last pass certificate.  You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date.   For example, if your MOT runs out on the 15th May, the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date for next year is the 16th April.

You can get an MOT earlier, but the MOT renewal date for the following year will be different.

What if my MOT has run out?

You cannot drive your vehicle on the road if the MOT has run out. You can be prosecuted if caught!  The only exceptions to drive it are:

  • To and from somewhere to get it repaired
  • To a pre-arranged MOT test

PLEASE NOTE:  YOU CAN BE FINED UP TO £1,000
FOR DRIVING A VEHICLE WITHOUT A VALID MOT.

How does an MOT test work?

During the MOT, important parts on your vehicle will be checked to make sure they meet legal standards.  You can watch the test from a viewing area or relax in our comfortable reception with complimentary newspapers.

  About the MOT

The MOT tests some important items on your vehicle to check they meet the legal standards.   It isn't the same as having your vehicle serviced and doesn’t check its general mechanical condition.

The test doesn’t cover the condition of the:
  • Engine
  • Clutch
  • Gearbox

  MOT test results

Your vehicle can either pass or fail the MOT.  If it fails, you’ll get a list of the things that need to be fixed.   If your vehicle passes the MOT, you’ll receive an MOT test certificate and it will be recorded in the MOT database.

What happens if my MOT fails?

If your vehicle fails the MOT you’ll get a “refusal of an MOT certificate” and it will be recorded as a failure in the MOT database.  You can appeal the result if you think it’s wrong.

Can you remind me when my MOT is due?

Yes we can! We understand that with busy lives, sometimes vehicle maintenance and MOT tests can often slip our mind which is why we offer a complimentary MOT reminder service.  There’s no obligation to have the test carried out with us, although we’d really love it if you did, but we’ll send you an email reminder 3 weeks before your current MOT expires giving you plenty of chance to get it booked in.

Fill in the sort form below with your name, vehicle make, registration number and email address, and we can do the rest!  You’ll be added straight onto our reminder list and you’ll never forget your MOT again!

Can I drive my car if the MOT test has failed?

You can take your vehicle away if your MOT certificate is still valid. If your MOT has run out you can take your vehicle away to have the failed defects fixed if you decided not to have the repair work carried out with us.

However, you need to be aware that your vehicle still needs to meet the minimum standards of road worthiness at all times or you can be fined.

PLEASE NOTE: YOU CAN BE FINED UP TO £2,500, BE BANNED FROM DRIVING AND GET 3 PENALTY POINTS FOR DRIVING A VEHICLE IN A DANGEROUS CONDITION.

What happens about an MOT re-test after repair?

If you have the required repairs carried out within 10 working days we will carry out your re-test free of charge, regardless of whether you have the repairs carried out with us.

However, if you require longer than 10 working days to complete the repairs, you will have to undertake a full MOT test again which will be chargeable.
