Our History

Crightons of Peterborough was originally founded by husband and wife team George and Pat Crighton to provide tax free vehicles to service personnel serving in the UK, Cyprus, Germany, Hong Kong and Russia.

The company’s long standing relationship with Mitsubishi started when George, having completed his RAF career, imported the first of their cars ever to come to Britain.

Mitsubishi prided themselves on the quality of the engineering of their vehicles. The average annual warranty claim was a mere 87p compared to the average annual British Leyland claim of £800! It took a British Leyland mechanic a full day to carry out a pre-delivery check on one of their cars while a Mitsubishi check could be done in two hours.

It all goes to show why Mitsubishi felt confident enough to be the first company to offer a three year unlimited mileage warranty, even if the vehicle was used as a taxi or by a driving instructor, when the British average warranty was just twelve months.

George and Pat’s son, Iain, was determined to test these new cars to their limits and drove it in a local rally championship. His delight at finishing first was somewhat dimmed when he wrote the car off shortly afterwards. So the first ever Mitsubishi imported into Britain came to an unfortunate end.

However, Iain had the engine removed and stripped down and, despite it having completed 100,000 miles, it showed no sign of wear and tear. Iain promptly had it put into his next rally car.

Rallying ran in the Crighton family and George showed his son how it should be done when he managed to drive a Mitsubishi off a cliff in Cyprus. Fortunately the car landed on the rocks below and not the sea, as George was unable to swim. Most impressively, the strength of the car meant he was able to walk away unscathed, pondering whether to take swimming lessons.

There’s plenty more to tell but for now why not take a look at our Timeline below ...

A family day out to remember at Buckingham Palace! This was a day I’ll treasure – meeting the future King of England, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and a really nice guy to talk to! Would you believe we were talking about his wife, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge – my lips are sealed! Couldn’t have wished for a better person to present my MBE.

It’s very rare that I can get my wife Thelma in front of a camera, but even she couldn’t say no on this occasion – outside Buckingham Palace with my lovely MBE and even lovelier wife!

Not often you get the chance to meet a personal hero and superstar - Sir Chris Hoy MBE, 6 times Olympic Champion and 11 times World Champion cyclist. “As we are both Scottish and I also own a cycle shop it only seemed proper to ask if we could perhaps do some business together! It was one of the nicest refusals I’d had in a long time! He’s still my hero!

We get to meet some really interesting people. In 1982 we had a visit from Fiona Brothers, the first lady to compete in Formula One powerboat racing – she told us these boats accelerate up to 60mph faster than a Formula 1 car!

The garage business nearly didn’t happen. These are the remains of George Crighton’s rally car after he crashed over a cliff in Cyprus. He was more worried about reaching the sea as he couldn’t swim!
